Hurricane Harvey: Tips on how we can help

The world was devastated with the news of Hurricane Harvey. Social media is full of disheartening photos of people that were affected by the latest natural disaster. The images of children laying on countertops to avoid the water in their home, the elderly in wheelchairs with water that comes past their waist. The imagery made us all want to do something to help the hurricane victims in Southern Texas. Most people just want to donate money but they may not have any extra money to give. So I decided to come up with a list of other ways to help hurricane victims.

Donate food & clothing

Some of the hurricane victims have lost everything in the flood and have nothing but the clothes on their backs. So you can donate nonperishable food items, clothing, blankets, shoes, and baby items such as wipes, diapers, and blankets to a local clothing drive in Houston or local charities in support of Southern Texas. Search local clothing drives for Houston and donate old things from your home that you no longer need. Here are a few charities that you can mail packages too or drop off at your local donation center.

Other food banks can be found on this website. http://www.houstonpress.com/restaurants/texas-food-banks-mobilize-for-hurricane-harvey-how-you-can-help-9735249

At the moment, a lot of charities aren’t accepting clothing items but this is not something that will be fixed over night. So over time they will begin accepting clothing items for the hurricane victims. Here is a site that takes local drop offs in Houston. http://www.houstonemergency.org/donations-drop-off/

Volunteer

If you are local, you can volunteer your time. Volunteers are needed at local food banks and shelters. Also, if you are local and have a boat think about going to rescue flood victims from their homes. There are a lot of people that are still stuck out there. United way has a list of volunteer opportunities for people who are willing to help. https://www.unitedwayhouston.org/flood

Donate blood

Several hospitals are reporting blood shortages and seeking donations in the wake of the storm. Here are a list of local blood donation drives happening in Texas and places you can donate blood nationally.

Donate Money

I know a lot of people are iffy about donating money to certain national organizations like FEMA and American Red Cross, so I found a couple of local charities that you can donate to.

We are all praying for the Hurricane Harvey victims but if you are able to help in anyway. Please do so.

As always, stay royal Kings & Queens.

  1. Good morning Queensize Jasmine, those are all great ideas to assist with the victims of hurricane Harvey. I like all them, however, we could also help with the cleanup of Houston. Great Idea!
